However, Hu Zhiyong, director of the Center for Indian Studies and distinguished professor at Zhejiang International Studies University, and a research fellow at the Institute of International Relations at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, cautioned against overstating the near-term prospects for China-India AI cooperation.

Hu told the Global Times that differences in technological capabilities, coupled with lingering political mistrust, could make cooperation difficult to translate from potential into concrete projects.

India has frequently subjected Chinese technology and investment to scrutiny on national security and data security grounds, he noted, arguing that such concerns could affect cooperation even in relatively less sensitive areas.

"China-India cooperation in AI could face a difficult path unless mutual trust improves," Hu warned, adding that greater political trust and a less confrontational approach toward technological competition would be necessary for AI cooperation to gradually move forward.
